Somewhere In Europe @ Any Given Time

Somehow, I seem to continue to ignore my blogging. Perhaps that has something to do with the fact that I just don't have the incentive, nor the viewership or readership, to feel it is justified.
However, because I know it exists, and I know at least one person is reading this, I will write a few words.

I am presently in London. But you already knew that.
I am engaged. Surprise!
I have no pets.

Life is good. I'm still working for the news making sure the world knows what's going on. I've traveled more in the last 18 months than I have ever before and for that I am thankful - it was a dream opportunity.

I don't know when i will be coming home - maybe home is here. Whenever I decide it will be the beginning of another new chapter in my life.

...and I bet I will find my way back to this blog and try and write about it.

Afghanistan 2010

Hi... I know i don't keep in touch all that well, but I'm trying to keep you all in the loop.

Some of you may already know that I will be going to Afghanistan for work in a couple of months - the dates have been reshuffled several times, but everything is firmed up now for late February to end of March. I will be based with the Canadian military in the southern province of Kandahar within the safety of the airport military compound.

I have no doubt that it will be a trip of a life time - and I am fully prepared for what will come.
I know how to fix a compound fracture and I am a specialist in burns (all thanks to my Hostile Environment and Emergency training course) - put on by a few ex-SAS guys.

What I'm looking forward to most? Taking pictures of things I will have never seen - and then posting them so you may see them as well.

Snap!

What's A Photograph?

I'm not looking to get the perfectly clean and safe shot. I like pictures telling us stories and conveying emotions... A picture is not just aesthetics. It can be, of course, but then, it just fulfills half its potential. This means sometimes the subject is ugly, sometimes the grain is visible, sometimes the angle is not as it should, yet it all works to tell the story. And everything in the picture is about the story. The rules, breaking the rules, the blur, the grain, chosing between bw or colour, the crop, the format. A lot of people will teach you THE rules, and you learn them. But they are not meant to always apply. Whatever rule you use, it should be a tool for the story within the picture and nothing else. The photograph is your own story.
